Skin is the body's largest organ, with thickness varying between 0.05mm on the eyelids, where it is most delicate and translucent, to 0.65 mm on the soles of the feet, where it is at its toughest. Its main functions are to protect the body, help regulate body temperature and excrete waste such as water and salt, but we could do better by having beautiful clear skin as well, too!

What can we do to achieve beautiful clear skin?
Skin consists of three layers: the outer layer called the epidermis; the dermis, which is full of glands and blood vessels and the hypoderm, a fatty tissue that cushions the dermis from muscles beneath. The epidermis has no blood vessels and can heal without a trace, giving rise to clear skin. Its surface cells are flat and horny. They are in fact non-living and shed daily, every minute of the day to be replaced by other cells beneath them. If the skin is exposed to harsh conditions such as blistering sun, biting wind, or stinging cold without any protective cream, cells will shed at a faster rate and the skin becomes red and raw.
The dermis is full of blood vessels and scars when damaged. The sebaceous glands in the dermis secrete sebum, one of skin's natural moisturisers. If secreted in the right proportions, the skin will be soft, supple and fine-textured (achieving the much sought after clear skin). It will be smooth and blemish-free, rose-tinted and translucent. Underactive sebaceous gland cause dry skin; overactive ones cause oily skin. Fortunately, a lot can be done to improve an imperfect one in order to achieve beautiful clear skin.
Skin, our contact with the elements, is bound to show the effects of use and abuse, and to reflect the process of aging. In order to achieve beautiful clear skin, start to care for your skin from premature aging because of illness, an unhealthy diet, heavy smoking or drinking, or over-exposure to heat, cold or humid climate. The best way to keep a clear, smooth and young skin would be to start caring for it carefully - with a twice daily cleaning routine - as early as possible. Clear skin is no longer to far away to grasp. A little bit of hardwork goes a long way in achieveing beautiful, youthful, clear skin.
