The word, aromatherapy, was coined by a French chemist Gattefosse, in the early years of this century. He was the first European to 'discover' the therapeutic powers of essential oils. Apparently he burned his hand one day in the laboratory and plunged it instinctively into a bowl of lavender oil to relieve the pain. to his surpise, the wound healed in a very short time and he was left with very little scarring. He then set out to investigate the uses of essentials oil and his work was succeeded with the distinguished Austrian biochemist, Marguerite Maury.

How to use essential oils:

Oils can be used in several ways and the treatment is luxurious. First the oil should be diluted in a neutral carrier oil. To apply neat essential oil to the skin could cause a burn. You can buy oils ready-diluted, but if you have the concentrated essence, it needs to be mixed in the proportion of 1:50 with a carrier such as almond, apricot, hazelnut, groundnut or safflower oil. Always store essential oils in tightly capped or stoppered dark-glass bottles in a cool place or in the fridge. Essential oils are highly volatile, unlike the fatty culinary oils, and will evaporate quickly if exposed to heat, light or air.

The diluted oils can be applied to the face and body and rubbed or massaged into the skin or another way to enjoy the oils is to add about 10 drops to a hot bath. Make sure that there no draughts in the bathroom and have a relaxing soak, inhaling the perfume at the same time.
