Hair Loss for Women
Hair loss for women is usually characterized by hair loss at the crown. In woman the frontal hairline is maintained with diffuse hair loss that is somewhat accentuated at the crown.
Hair loss in woman, especially after pregnancy, is often due to change in circulating levels of estrogen. During pregnancy, the number of follicles in anagen (growth phase) is higher, hence the hair thickens. However, after delivery the hair follicles return to the resting phase and the hair is shed. Woman might believe that they are experiencing hair loss when in reality the hair is returning to the normal pre-pregnancy state. Hair loss due to this nature is often temporary and self-limiting.
Female hair loss may be also caused by an iron deficiency. If hair loss is due to this cause, then a 2-month course of iron supplementation should result in thickening of the hair. If the patient fails to respond to this hair loss treatment, then the patient should be reassessed.
There is also another cause of hair loss in woman namely 'traction alopecia'. This type of hair loss is due to excess and sustained tension on the hair, usually as a result of styling hair with rollers or a particular type of hairstyle. Also, there are specific events that are particularly stressful in life which may also trigger hair loss. It is also important to identify these areas to help tackle problems with hair loss.
